If someone happens to have a camera handy, would you take a picture of a broad bean for me please- either cooked or on the plant?

I have the camera but not the capacity to transfer them yet... my lappy is down...  :-[

I think Grannie Annie is the southern USA... where they call them Fava Beans if my memory serves me right...  :)

Laura, what a beautiful and exciting garden and web site you have! Love those mountains! I need more time to wander through it all but what I've read so far is very interesting. It looks like you've made great use of the land with no wastage.

I saw your bean picture. Thank you. Just wanted to make sure I knew what folks on this forum were talking about when they say "broad bean".

Ah I see. Broad Bean or Fava Bean are they also called field beans or is that something different?

I'm not sure what is meant by field beans. ??? I only grow bush green beans, purple pole beans and lima beans.

field beans are just a type of broad bean, smaller than the "proper" ones. They're used as a green manure, though they're popular in places like Egypt as a food, for making falafel for instance

Yep field beans are just unimproved broad beans... used as green manure, the whole thing is dug in, or the tops used as cattle feed and the root system left behind as it is a legume that fixes nitrogen. CJ the HSL send out "Martock" which is a small bean grown for centuries by the Bishop's Garden for Wells Cathedral. Are your Purple Pole just french beans like, Blue Coco? Or something really exotic like LabLab or Hyacinth beans? I've tried them three times now and couldn't even get them to germinate in our big greenhouse in May....

This is a picture from a previous year and not the state of affairs at the moment.

It will be another few weeks yet until this years stock will be at this stage.

I guessed the question was raised to alleviate confusion i.e. in different parts of the world the some things are known under different names.

Field beans are grown for the beans, not as green manure or just the tops. They're left to dry out in the field then harvested with a combine - they make one hell of a racket when being blown up into a silo ! The farm in our village used them for pig feed - although they hav'nt grown them for a few years now.

The one's i've seen are big too, some as big as my thumb.

Purple Trionfo Violetto Pole Bean (an experimental crop this year for me) and the lima is also an experiment- seed from a friend who says they are large sweet beans and from the size of the seed he must be right. The slugs got all but 4 plants so we'll just have a taste I guess ::)  Also put up a teepee of branches in one corner and planted pole beans from a previous year's gathered seed and hope it attracts away the Japanese Beetles which go for the higher crop more than bush beans for some reason. Voracious pests!
