Hello all,

Having been asked about these on another forum in the middle of last year i became interested in what they were and have been trying to locate a UK supplier but can't find one. There are a couple in the USA but they don't ship outside of the US.
The HDSL list four varieties native to the UK but won't supply them because of the difficulties in shipping - they're lifted in September and shipped as bulbs.
They used to be grow extensively in the UK, at least up until the 40's when they fell out of favour.
Does anybody have any they're prepared to send me? I'm happy to pay postage. Please reply by PM.

I have some and so does DebP... we were talking about them yesterday... can't remember where mine are..  :-[

Are these the things you're talking about? T

I think they were called egyptian or walking onions when I got them from another A4A member 2 years ago. They grow bulbils on the ends of the stalks that weigh the stalks down until they hit the ground where they start growing again. I'm afraid I cut mine right back to the ground late last autumn because they got a bit rusty, so they're only at the same sort of stage shown in the photo and I won't have bulbils to send for a while yet.

I think realseeds.co.uk were going to have stock.  Might be worth checking out their website.

Yes, Egyptian or Walking onions are one particular variety. Whilst I would like some of these they are not the main varieties I'm looking for.
As far as I've been able to detemine potato/multiplier onions are perennial onions more related to shallots, except that they bulb below ground and keep on producing bulbs as long as they're left in the ground. I haven't determined exactly where they fit in the picture but I believe Welsh onions are related. I have also come across one source that may indicate that multiplier onions are related to the Amaryllis whilst still being Alliums. All seem to be part of the Allium Cepa L botanical group.

I could let you have some walking onions later in the season, but they're all in the ground right now.

I'd love some if thats ok. No rush. Just trying to find out if there are any UK sources before attempting to sort out the nightmare I suspect its going to be to get them shipped in from the US. I can get them sent to friends in the US, its just sorting out EU/UK customs that I suspect is going to be the problem.
