This topic has baffled me with planning where to plant what in my small little plots.

I have 1 adult and 2 kids, and growing veg just for us.

If i sow say 15 carrots now, how many weeks do I wait till I put the next 15 in?

Im so confused, have put the planning on hold till I understand it fully.

I have Carol Kleins book on grown your own veg, but its not explaining it in there either, just says plant a few at a time.  ??? ??? ???

VERY CONFUSING for a newbie... can anyone help????

with carrots you are very unlikely to get fifteen carrots from fifteen seeds as some wont germinate.  its not such an exact science i'm afraid.  it really is more a case of a few at a time. with carrots i would sow perhaps half a row every three weeks or so.  other crops will space out differently time wise depending really on how long they take to grow and how long the harvest is.  for example parsnips are in the ground a long time and can all be sown at once. like wise onions leeks etc.  on the other hand things like lettuce french beans beetroot and your carrots are quick growing and benefit from succesion. with these i guess a general rule of half a row every couple of weeks wont go far wrong. this sort of thing you will learn from experience.

15 Carrots won't go far? Assuming you like Carrots, I would sow a 10' row, & again in 3 weekly intervals.

Here is a condensed quote -

"SOW PROTECTION? TYPE HARVEST
Mid February Cloche protection Earlies Early June
March Cloche protection Earlies June to July
April None Early and maincrop Earlies - Mid July to August
Maincrop - August
mid May None Maincrop August
June None Maincrop September "

I sow ball rooted varieties until October.

Remember to pull young ones, rather than waiting for all to fully mature.
July None Maincrop October

we sometimes do small bunches, say 5 or 6 seeds every 9"..that way, if they all don't germinate, at least you get some..we pull them up as baby carrots  :)
