Hi
I am going to have a go at growing some Strawberry popcorn. I have been reading that you you can cook & eat the popcorn!

Has anyone done this? is it safe to eat and is it nice.

sorry to jump on this thread, thanks for the link Lauren, I had been reading about the popcorn as well.

Hi it is edible, I  have grown it, this year I am doing Ruby Red  and Baby Rice popcorns.

To pop it it has to be totally dry or it will cook like regular corn.

may I ask how you would dry it please  :)

Leave it on the plants as long as you can, it will start to dry there. Harvest, remove husks and silks, put into mesh bags hang in a warm dry place, with air flow for about a month, ideally not touching, you can put it tights with knots,check it, if you have some that starts to go bad you need more  warmth or air flow.  After about a month rub your fingers over it , if ready the kernels should pop off with a bit of pressue, try popping a bit, if it is ready it will pop, if not leave it a bit longer.

Store when thoroughly dry in jars pref in fridge.

If  it gets too dry, eg if you don't use it on a long time it won't pop either,it needs  trace of moisture to get s good pop

This only applies to the type of corn used for popcorn, or flint corn,they reamin plump when dry,tt doesn't work with all corns the kernels shrink.

Iwould like to say a big thank you to you all.  I am glad I joined this site you are all so kind and welcoming.

Sorry it has taken me so long to come back to the forum and say thank you but my Daughter is moving home and it has been a busy day.

I am waiting for the strawberry popcorn to come from a bidding web site (not sure I can say the name) lol. They do look a very nice and I have told my younger daughter all about them and she wants to plant some in her bed on my allotment plot.  I think they look ideal for children and if they taste nice, then that's got to be a good.

This is an exciting year for me as I have now got the plot looking like I want after taking it over in such a mangled high weeded state and now I have just finished the pond ( a frog came to it on Friday, yes) I cant wait to get planting this year.

Well I now know how to make the popcorn, if I get mine to grow.

What I would like to ask is can you collect seeds from these ready for next time or do you have to keep buying each year?
