Allotments 4 All

Hi can anyone help.  I am new to veg gardening and have just brought potatoes.  There is no instructions on the packet, so when and how should i plant them.  Thanks  Jackie ;)

Duke of york pots are first earlies i would plant them out late march maybe two weeks earlier in southern areas.12 inches apart and  at a depth of around 5 inches 2 feet between the rows

Set them out in the light to 'chit' = sprout. When they have 1/2" sprouts they are ready to go out - end March- April??

Hi cabbage patch and welcome, my earlies went in on the 4th of March last year but it all depends on your area and the weather, so after the frosts when the ground is workable should be fine.  ;D ;D ;D

Hiya cabbagepatch. Put a couple in a decent sized bucket now and just cover with compost/soil . Keep them outside unless there is frost when you should bring them in. As they grow gradually fill the bucket. Do this every week until March when the rest can go in the ground although, again, stagger planting. That way you will have an earlier crop and also a successional crop.

I only ever grow two varieties Red Dukes and Pink Fir Apple.

Neither have huge yields like Desiree or Maris Piper, but the taste is unbeatable.

Chitting for the Dukes is extremely rewarding. It'll bring harvesting time forward by about a month, which means you get to taste in high summer, not early autumn (which is when the PFAs start to be harvested).

cabbagepatch , if you want info about potato varieties and how to grow the, consult the potato bible - "Alan Romans' Guide to Seed Potato Varieties", available in most good libraries. (only buy it if your a potato-head)
