Wellies!

Not having worn wellies since I was a child I've come round to the idea that I need a pair to go with the new allotment.

A quick look online has seen pricing ranging from £20 to £100+ which is a bit scary! I much prefer the £20 end of that scale (although even that seems a bir pricy for what is essentially a bit of moulded rubber...) but was wondering if anyone can recommend any as well as places to buy them...

Thanks :)

Oh I forgot to add...Buy a pair slightly bigger than ordinary shoes so you can comfortably wear either two pairs of socks or chunky hiking style ones. Your feet can get quite cold in wellies  ::)

I wear similar to these, bought at Focus
My Wellie Shoes  ;D

If your feet are on the large side (like me),
then WalkTall have got Wellies for £55 or Rigger boots for £40. (£4.95 delivery)

Try them on! I bought cheap ones at homebase, size 5 as it always fits, which they did, right up to the calf, where they became far too tight. Now debating whether to try to wear them in, cut an inch off the top, or plant something in them and start again!
For myself I am an optimist - it does not seem to be much use being anything else.

Most cheap shoe shops have funky ones on sale at the mo.  Even seen them in Asda!!.
I got funky ones for under ten pounds.. thick socks they work fine  :)  ;D

The Dunlop ones are around £10 they tend to be bigger than your normal shoe size and I get them at a stall in the weekly market. Millets often has them and most shoe shops. I find the fancy expensive ones don't suit the shape of my foot. I did buy myself a fancy pair of fleece wellies socks recently but haven't tried them out in my wellies yet.

I inherited mine - they were in the allotment shed  ;D

Spookily, they fit too!
Best wishes,

Aldi and Lidl have them as their specials at times and Matalan often have them as well if you want coloured or patterned ones.

HWTHKB (he who thinks he knows best! ;)) swears by his b and q ones, think they were about a tenner and they've been lottied for two years.
I favour the more 'glamorous' welly-flowers, stripes, spots, garish colours, I do find they tend to peel and perish a bit faster than his green ones which look very unchanged. Maybe I just work harder! ;D They have never been more than a tenner, and they do give my fellow lottie holders something to talk about! ;D ;D - Good Luck!

debster

whichever you go to buy try them many have very thin soles and you can feel things through then stones etc

DeeBee

Good point Debster, thorns, stones  and repeated pushing down on the old digging fork/spade can lead to sore foot if they aren't robust enough in the sole. :)

Cheers everyone, some great advice there!

We're off to Matalan on Sat anyway so I'll try there first and B&Q on the way home if needed.

I used to have wellies but now have cheap steel toe cap boots with a steel midsole (for digging) that I bought from Lidls.  Do much better and if I want to protect my trouser bottoms, I wear my gaiters (which cost a lot more than the boots)

Hi,

I got mine on Ebay - steel toe cap, steel mid sole and the grips are great - they seem like industrial standard - here's a link:

When weeding, the best way to make sure you are removing a weed and not a valuable plant is to pull on it. If it comes out of the ground easily, it is a valuable plant.
