I`ve got some to try this year-it`s a lot to live up to.l

No tomato is the `best`-but some are not worth growing-I`ll not name it here

Yep that's the one, it is an excellent tom,you could even make money with this one!!

I also tried looking them up as Jeannine sent me a few to try this year.  I cannot wait - I am going to be wall to wall tomatoes.

 Generally speaking all black tomatoes have a strong taste,none are truly black but vary from a very dark red through to a brown colour.
They originated in Russia ,there are about 60 varieties that are classified as Blacks.


They are my personal favourites, I believe I have most of them

Japanese Black trifele (aka Black truffle) it  is not a Japanese tomato.

It is a medium sized fruit about 1/2 pound.

Considered one of the blackest. I personally would describe it as a  deep brownish red, like a very dark mahogany colour, although environment can alter the shading somewhat, blacks like a slightly acidic soil. It has slightly green shoulders.

It is shaped like a pear.

Potato leaf foliage.

Mid to late season.

Determinate. note there has been some controversy about this but I think finally it is generally agreed it is determinate.Most blacks are not.

Flavour is outstanding, strong earthy rich tomato flavour

Plants are very productive.

Fruit is smooth and not subject to cracking.

Not very thick skinned.

Open pollinated, you can keep the seed.

Sorry Rutters  I am just on the point of buying them myself, I never save tomato seeds I always buy them in and have very few of these. Raymond gets his seeds from Plants of Distinction a brilliant company who have a huge range of toms,

I did my own taste test last year between JBT, Cherokee Purple,Carbon,Black Krim and Blue Ridge Mountain,

I would put JBT last for taste, but first for being a very hardy plant which in my case grew out of blight at least twice, it was determined to fruit, in fact the plant in my unheated greenhouse only died last week :o

I will hopefully be growing them all again this year, can't wait, hope this helps/ shades  :-*
