 8) 8) I see the big Dragon Flies are back.Do you remember we had a lot last year?

 :) Yes they're so lovely, except to my crazy hubby who thought they were hornets ???.

I love them,remind me of a glen  by a river in the east of Skye where we camped when the kids were young,umpteen years ago,when we used to have real summers!

One day the whole of the river's edge was shimmering with dragon and damsel flies ,their wings glistening in the clear sunlight.

We were all entranced.

Never seen so many at one time before or since,and it always comes back to me when I see even one.

I put my wildlife pond in so I would get dragon flies.  Seems selfish but there's a nice little wildlife world in and around it now.  Gotta buy some waders and haul out some of the giant reedmace and a few tons of pond plants. (It's haul out by proxy - I'm sending a son in!)

FOC - I knew we had our children for a reason !!

My grandson always refers to the ones that fly around our garden as helicopters - I suppose that's quite logical for a child.

Saw 3 dragonflies yesterday during an EXTREMELY long walk through the middle of a wood! Also lucky enough to see a red deer stag. We had never seen one before - only hinds and fawns. We've had glorious weather up here too and only tend to see dragonflies on very hot days.

what's the difference between dragon and damsel flies?

 ;D damsel flies are smaller, the great big ones are the dragon flies. Must be more to it than that but thats how I was told.

We saw some loverly, big dragonflies in Holland when we were on holiday. Looked for all the world like miniature bi-planes. Lovely rich colours. Loads of damselflies and dragons too when we visited Stapley Water Gardens on the way back up north.

 :)Doris its interesting, I didn't realise there were so many different species, all the water in Holland woud account for Eileen seeing so many then, I expect Wills sees quite a few in summer.I wonder if they would breed in my tiny water feature.

At the moment there are quite a lot of dragonflies about (the big ones). The ones I especially like are a maller variety with blue 'light' behind their head and on the tip of their tail. They can be found near small streams. Quite beautifull indeed

It was a dragon, not damsel, fly that was in my garden. When I was riding yesterday (near a big lake) I saw lots of little ones (damsels) and then a couple of big ones (dragons). Mine was the size of the dragonfly!
