Hi,

We have just bought a house here in Denmark and it has a big southfacing garden, unfortunately with lots of moss. I plan to fell a couple of big trees and then deal with the moss, but what's the best way of dealing with it? It's a big garden, so wouldn't very much like to dig everything up and start over :o .

Thanks in anticipation:-)

Then after that read this and they both will help!  http://tinyurl.com/yrxkae

Thanks very much Tim and Tee Gee, I'll keep those two links and do that in week 20 as suggested.  :)

You need to ask why there's a lot of moss, rather than just putting poison on it. Is it a mossy lawn, or what?

I agree with R_B.  We live in an area with a very high water table.  Quite apart from the lawn, if OH didn't work on it, would be virtually 100% moss, the garden that we plant summer bedding at the moment is gradually greening over with moss.

The felling of the trees should help, but you need to look at the underlying conditions.

Rent a scarifier to get the moss out, then you rake it up.

Be carefull if you try to rake moss out without first killing it you only spread it. You really do need to find the reason for it being there. It can sometimes be caused through mowing too low.You do not find moss in long grass.

Glad to see the others are on the ball.

I didn't bother typing the things they mentioned because I realised they were on the link I gave.

I agree with Robert, prevention is better than cure so determine the cause.

Thanks for all those replies, not quite sure how I'll definitely determine the cause apart from the trees, I guess the grass was quite short... The garden is south facing though, but there is a LOT of moss...
