Can anyone identify this insect that flew into my neighbours house this morning.
We at first thought it was a bee, now we are not so sure.
It is in a matchbox, which might give some idea of size, otherwise I sorry about the quality of the pictures.

froglets

woohoo - first time past the censor!

...and if you have a dead one, it means you probably have lots of eggs underground, dunno what they eat, but they are big ugly spuds before they mature, so I guess they must do some damage........

yep, it's a may bug.
we get HUNDREDS of them flying round the oak tree by our garden, I think they eat the tender new leaves.
last year was a bumper year but this year they've been late and not so many of them.
they have a big mating frenzy then plummet to the ground to die  â€" they were bouncing off my car bonnet last year!
this year we have a pair of blackbrids who've wised up to the free meal which spend the evenings performing aerial acrobatics trying to catch them ;D
if you dig up the grubs they're quite scary: huge white fat things with big brown heads... <shudder>

I've always called those cockshafers, but it's just an alternate name. We used to go on holiday in Herefordshire when I was a kid, and they were always flying into the caravan.

Paulines7

This is a pupa of the Cockchafer otherwise known as the May Bug.  I dug quite a few up from my garden.

Fork

Definately a Cockchafer......or most commonly known as a May Bug.
You can pick your friends, and you can pick your nose, but you can't pick your friends nose

Thanks everyone for the replies. I will let my neighbour know.

What was the problem with the censor then?  :o :-[ ;) ;D
