Its seems like its happened, I have lost my Hedgehog to the b***** A697.   She didn't turn up last night for her feed and I picked a corpse up off the road last night so it must have been her.  I am quite upset really, cos i saw her through the winter tucked up in the Hedgehog house and have fed her all the slugs n snales that she needs plus the bird feed!!!  She must have just been knocked by someat because she wasn't bludy, just looked like 'sleeping' in the middle of the road.  I returned her to nature, nestled her in the grass under the hedge.

Do hope another one comes along to get spoilt rotten.

:'( :'( :'(

Aaaw Carol, I am so sorry you lost a friend, I too was devastated when our resident hedgehog died, we think it was poisoned, we found her huddled under a bush, it was so sad.  But now we have a new one so I am sure you will have a new one too, especially if word gets round what a good home you provide! :'(

Oh, it's all bad news this morning - think I'll go away again. Your hedgehog, Jeannines bird.  :'(
We lost ours to the road outside our house a few years ago. Same thing. Nice warm box for the winter, spoilt rotten when he woke up then hit by a car soon after. Very upsetting and frustrating.  :'(

Just as one door closes another opens is the old saying and I now have another Hedgehog eating at Midnight.  This one is smaller than the one killed but hey I have another Hedgie to nurture and depend on for keeping the slugs at bay.  Whoopeeee. ;D ;D ;D

Sometimes life can be cruel
When I get old I don't want people thinking
"What a sweet little old lady"........
                             I want em saying
"Oh Crap! Whats she up to now ?"

cacran

I want a hedgehog too. Made a nice little home for one but no takers yet :'(

Carol

Now I have TWO eating at midnight!!!!  woweeeeee   hope they keep off the d**n road.

;D ;D

Carol that's great!! I did everything to try to protect mine from the road, including wrapping the gate in chicken wire so he couldn't sqeeze through the gaps! They are tricky wee things though. He got out through the prison gate and seemingly through a solid brick wall. All that effort and then he was squished anyway poor thing. Hope these have more sense!  ;D

I have at least 2 in the minuscule front garden. The lads meet them at night when they go out for a smoke. I notice their rooting round in the garden.

Also have at least one in the backgarden (terraced house)

Hedgehogs only eat slugs if they can't get anything else.  They will die if they eventually from eating slugs.   Keep up with cat food.

Why will they die Old man? What would they normally live on if no cat food around?
I would die if there were only slugs to eat actually but thought I'd ask out of interest!

A hedgehog will only eat slugs and snails if nothing else is available.  Daft they ain't.

Slugs and snails carry lungworm.  The larva hatch inside and then eat their way through the hedgehogs lungs.  This kills Master Hedgepig fairly quickly.

Additionally, slugs eat the pellets that some dingo's put down so the accumulative affect of poison builds up in their little bodies.

If you see a hedgehog out and about in daylight, it is probably starving.

They will eat:

Bettles
Birds eggs
Worms
Voles
Bees
Birds
Centipedes, Millipedes, Earwigs, Woodlice

My last pate sandwich.

Thank you. Had no idea about the lungworm thing or that they will eat voles!
