What, please, is 'ones' interpretation of the bracketed bit??

Hmmm.  Sounds as though even if there's no frost, they'll be unhappy with chilly nights.  So I'd interpret it as needing protection while the plants are growing, and perhaps a windbreak indefinitely.

So do I. But T&M refuse to be drawn on the point. In addition, they don't warn you beforehand that the best flavour is from outdoor plants, nor do they tell you whether they are bush or cordon. Only by further reading do you see that they are ideal for pots & baskets.
