will try and get a photo but here goes ........

from an allotment where the previous owner passed away earlier in the year I rescued a few drying out chrysanthemums and what I thought was a large dahlia tuber/root.

After potting up the large rootwhich had a bit of stalk thicker than my thumb it was watered and forgotten about. Today it is a healthy large leaved plant however the leaves are curved not sharp like a dahlias so I'm not too sure what it could be

Any ideas anyone

Are the leaves hairy?

Looks a bit like comfrey to me?

no not hairy
I must admit it does look like confrey but the plant had tubers like a dahlia.
Doesnt have that confrey smell either

Its a long time since I've grown them, but with that bit of stalk sticking out it puts me in mind of a jerusalem artichoke.  They could be the juvenile leaves.

had another inspection today - the leaves are very similar to my confrey but are more rounded not pointy/ spear like they also don't have that smell.

The route was definitely a bunch of tubers, same as a large dahlia. The shoot started out of the side in a  similar fashion. Not a JA as the tubers were nothing like the my mini deformed spuds I planted/harvested and the leaves of JA's are thistle like.

Guess its going to have to be planted somewhere - the question is good ground or bad ground.

Competition - will it flower and if so what colour (bet theres a lot of people shouting purple!) winner gets to say "told you so"

today there has been a development and Im going to have to eat humble pie.

Hadn't looked at the plant for a while and looked closer today while watering and noticed some dahlia like shoots emerging from both sides. After thinking "how could 1 plant have two different types of leaves I concluded that I had dug some soil into the pot rather than waste good compost on an unknown plant and maybe got a bit of confrey stalk in with it (or there might have been a bit in amongst the tubers. Most of the plots here have a lot of confrey and it grows wild by the hedgerows. Anyway I yanked it out and got a typical white (on the inside) confrey root + the confrey smell was now evident so Trixiebelle you were right all along :D but im definitely left with a dahlia albeit its playing catchup

anyone like to guess the colour? ;)
