There's an absolute pearl of a location if you don't mind very bare facilities.

It's called Stonethwaite Campsite, Borrowdale, Lake District. There's no leccy in the bogs, no showers and not much else. But, chuffin' 'ell! This place is probably the most beautiful location I have ever camped. You are literally camped on the river/stream that runs through the valley, covered by hills/mountains to each side. It's also a right little rain trap, but that's the beauty of it. As soon as the rain is off, go for a walk along the river, as it absolutely torrents and is amazingly impressive.

It's supposed to be no noise after 10pm, but there's not that much to do apart from a few bevvies. Someone had a moan at us when we were last there as we were sat around a campfire (lifted off the floor I might add) having a few swigs. We weren't that loud, but I suppose it needs a little give and take.

Anyway, the campsite is amazing, and my favourite of all time!

I can recommend Rosedale Campsite in North Yorkshire (nr Pickering / Whitby) - has showers (hot !), beautiful moorland, lovely small villages and an abbey / ruins.  It's also got a great pub within easy walking distance, The White Horse.  Area is quite hilly.

I also like Hayfield (nr Glossop) - not quite as pretty a camp site, but has Kinder Scout terrain on the doorstep.  There is a nice reservoir to walk around.  The town is quite pretty - couple of handy pubs - Royal Hotel is within easy walk.

Love camping with my girls.  ;D We bought really cool fire pit thingy last year and cheered the whole experience up no end. Much fun toasting marshymellows. Don't know about oop north but if you ever come south let me know - there are some gorgeous little camp sites in the new forest that we love. ;D Have fun.  ;D
Don't throw paper away. There is no away.

There was a very good booklet enclosed with last Saturday's Guardian that recommended some good sites.  See if you can get hold of it.

We haven't been camping in the UK for years, which is a shame.  We go camping quite a lot in France!  Might try it again ...  :)

I get loads of camping through the year as we run the Duke of Edinburgh Awards at the school I work in and I also help out with the Borough Scheme as well.

Gotta love the new forest but usually quite busy, my wife loves the Cotwolds Farm Park http://www.cotswoldfarmpark.co.uk/

I prefer the wild camping we do in the brecons with the DOE.

We camp too, but I am ashamed to say, I HATE it! :-[ :-[  The rest of the family think it is great to sleep on matresses that go down in the night, and to share toilet facilities with 30 other peeps at 5am when the birds wake you up!! ;D
And to me there is nothing more depressing than being in a tent with rain running through and hearing the kids exclaim, "OH, so THATS what happens when we touch the tent roof when it is pouring!"
BUT my OH has now figured out if he plies me with  enough vino collapso in the evening, I don't moan too much! ;) ;D ;D

But having said all that, it can be fun, and there are some great camp sites in the UK, we have not gone further than the South East (one of my stipulations is we have to be easy distance to drive home in case of week long torrents of rain! ;D)

We have found quite a few of ours on the internet, and some of those posted look interesting......................................but we shall still stay in the South East this summer! ;D

Good Luck Northener!

We Camp A Lot, with family, friends and on our own, best site (I Think) in the lakes is Fisherground Farm in Eskdale, not many mod cons but it's one of the only campsites left that will let you have a fire as long as it's on a existing fire site.

I also use this web site to find new / different sites as it has user reviews which are very honest!!!!

I spent a few weeks a year camping while I'm off working on site.  Absolutly love it.  We camp in a farmer's field rather than a proper site so the only mod con is a cold water tap in the hedge but it's at the right time of year for the good weather so no real hardship, plus when you've been digging all day sitting under a cold tap is lurverly.

The site is miles from anywhere - got some woods behind it where we can go badger watching, indeed, first night I was there first time around, I put the tent up and sat in the foyer all evening watching the hares play in the field in front of me while an owl sat on the fence post opposite.

Another memerable night was sitting in the dark out side the site hut, supping on cool beers while we watched a firework display on the other side of the valley a few miles away.

I also enjoy a spot of cycle-camping but lost my bivvie bag during a house move so haven't managed any for a while.

Just got back from Robin hoods bay. Lovely campsite on a working farm with views over the bay. Weather not brilliant slept in a bobble hat for 2 nights. Must have been cold though 2 outdoor cucs have been zapped with the frost.

I spoke to my mum yesterday - she was up in Alnwick where it was blowing an absolute gale and freezing ... they were walking around in fog ... whilst I was definitely over dressed in a t-shirt and baking in trousers - just a couple of clouds in the sky and very hot sunshine all day.
