Hello

I have just been given 8 French bean  "The Prince" Dwarf  seedling they are about 5" they came from a friend of a friend and i have no idea what to do as i am newbie growing veg what height do they grow to i will be growing these in car tyres any likes or dislikes as i have plenty of horse poo and compost and a bag of top soil.

Beans like moisture retentive soil as long as they don't end up sitting in water, so a lot of us mulch shredded paper & the like into our compost for beans.  They'll appreciate a dollop of poo in the mix too.

Can't help with height, but if they need suport, three canes in the tyre tied like a wigwam will give them soemthing to climb up.

Suggest three plants per tyre one at the base of each cane

They're descended from rainforest'y parts of the world which is why they like moisture and climb upwards.

never supported dwarfs before ,should be one less thing to worry about.

Thanks for that, So if i place some soggy newspaper at the bottom & sides of the tyre and then mix poo & compost together and fill the tyre up, Do you think 1 tyre is deep enough or is 2 best.

Hallo Brogesblue..Rohaise here ! I have just found a description of French beans" the prince" ----it says ---"the most popular of all french bean varieties. It is a dwarf growing flat pod recommended for exhibition "    :)

I've grown dwarf french before and like Markfield Rover I've never bothered supporting.
have heard you can support with short twigs and sticks if you feel they do need support.

I grew 'em last year without support . I feel they do need a little support otherwise they flop and the beans get stuck in the soil. The branches snapped orf anorl.

No supports needed, but a word of advice - they fruit very quickly: we failed to spot that they had fruited and so picked late by which time they had become stringy.

I go along with the others re-care they grow to around 12" high and don't need support as such.

But sometimes when it is covered in beans it helps to give them a little support to keep the beans off the soil and out of reach of slugs/snails.

The Prince grow about 12 " tall no need for support soil must hold moisture but not waterlogged
