I know this is an impossible question to answer, but it's the first time I've grown this and I've got hundreds of seeds coming up. I'm thinking that, since it stays in the ground for a long time, one or two rows will be enough with only four of us to eat it and not wanting it every day. What do you think?

i would say that between four and six (maybe eight) plants would be plenty for a family of four.

tim

Yes - but one has to overplant in case of failure?

But as soon as you're sure you have a number of viable plants, grub the others.

Tin Shed

I had ten of purple and ten of white and that has been the right amount for our family of four. Some of the plants cropped better than others, but I wouldn't plant out less than ten, myself. Have just discovered the white is delicious cooked then quickly stir fried with ginger and garlic!!

I have 6 PSB and 3 of us are struggling to keep up. Today there are some that are coming into flower despite daily pickings. It may however be due to the dry weather, because I seem to have a lot of budding bits and very little leaf.

I`ve got 8 for us two and we are going to waste an awful lot even eating it every day

Rosyred

I've got five plants going and its just right for us of 3 and two small children not eating every day. Like Tim said your may lose some, like I always do thats why I ended up with only 5.

saddad

We put in a dozen... with two hungery teenagers... hasn't all been eaten but on a cold winter we would have lost some..
