Stupid question # 2

Ok, so I purchased a coldframe from Lidl yesterday, under the heading "will come in useful"

What do I use it for???  ???

To protect seedlings from frost. If they have been in the greenhouse they then can go to the coldframe. Also to protect plants over the winter that you want to keep for next year.

Don't have a greenhouse (no room, only a small garden plot) so am utilising every availble window sill.

Right, third stupid question......

Would there be a preferable spot to locate said coldframe??

Sorry can't answer that i'm new to this game myself. No stupid questions on this forum if you don't know just ask. I'm sure someone else will be along soon.

Depends what you want to grow in it! I have one in the shade, for hardy seeds. One in marning sun and afternoon shade, for things that don't need heat, and now on in the sun, which is good for peppers and the like.

There's probably one one site available for it, anyway, on a south facing wall.

It'll be good for raising sedlings in the spring, but watch out for overheating.

why not have a go at growing a melon in it, as long as you can water well, they like the heat and taste brill  :)

Grow cukes, watermelon or regular melons in it.You can use it for growing some salad stuff like lettuce and radishes out of season too. You could also plant your tomatoes in it, leave the lid on and when they grow to the lid and the weather is safe, take of the lid and stake them  right on the spot. XX Jeannine

Is it ok to move plants straight from the coldframe to the outdoors once they have survived having the top wide open, or do they still require a bit more hardening off?

Useful for autumn sown sweet peas ,in deep pots
but watch out for slugs and mice
