Allotments 4 All

at my door yesterday. Some chap saw I was selling tomatoes and asked that dreaded question-do you have any Mxxxxxx!!.

He left with no broken limbs ;)but did leave with Pruden`s Purple,Mrs Taylor`s yellow pear,Caspian Pink,Black Russian ,Green Zebra and Nepal.

I'm right behind you - can't understand why they are the only variety sold by most garden centres - well I can understand why they sell them but not why people bother to buy them when they are 50p a kilo or whatever from Lidls.

Inexplicably my wife who won't be seen dead with blue striped food, and pays ridiculous amounts for organic stuff, came home from Tesco's with a pack of value tomatoes this week. They were all exactly the same size and colour and tasted of nothing. The only consolation is that they made a dry cheese sandwick a bit moister. The variety was not named but I have my suspicions that they are the unnamable.

Grew Moneymaker once - my first year and had bought all seed from GC.

My note on the results says "Woolly/sappy" and in the "Grow again?" column there's a big NO.

Reading from one of my Canadian seed catalogues.

Moneymaker , an old English variety  grown extensively in the UK.The plant is very vigourous and productive.Strongly branching plant produces clusters of fine round  tomatoes  about 1 1/2" -2" accross witha superb flavour. The number 1 tomato  for  the home garden in Britain.

Hey Cleo, you don't have to convince me, I laughed when I read the catalogue.  It was the first time that catalogue had them and I could just see the tomato collectors over there  fighting over the new English Heirloom.

My Dad grew those 60 years ago, it is what I learned on !!!

I have 200 types of tomato and not a Moneymaker seed in sight.
