Hi All,
I am planning to start the herb lemon grass in modules this weekend.
However, I do not know how big, or how many 'stalks' you get from a single plant. Information on this will allow me to determinine how many seeds to sow.
Furthermore, how hardy is this herb? Will it survive winter outside?

Thanks,
Thomas

Lemon grass will germinate like  weed if fresh. Then you pot on a few. They are not at all hardy outside. Over wintering is not hard  but they need frost free and keep the base bone dry-water sparingly from the bottom.

After a couple of years you should have stems thick enough to divide-take some for the kitchen and re-plant some in a pot

What would happen if the two I bought from the shop I planted in soil  or started is water.XX Jeannine

ours grew from a shop bought one(aldi) last year, put it in water 'til rooted then in a pot of compost in the poly, grew like grass, still in there, covered and waiting for new growth  ;D

We grew some in the greenhouse a couple of years ago and it went ballistic.  We had 7 plants and they were like a jungle, taking over a whole bed - they have quite sharp leaves a bit like pampas grass.  Loads of stems at the bases - we lifted them and dried them in the greenhouse by hanging them over the frame we grew the melons up.

We gave most of it away - after all, how much can you use?

Lemon grass seeds are the quickest germinating seeds I have seen, less than 24 hours.  :o

I'm going to sow some later on.

Oh Wow, I put the stalks in water today and planted seeds last night, it said on the packet it can be slow and erratic!! I sowed the whole lot to make sure I got a few, and there were tons of seeds in the packet, OOPS.
