Allotments 4 All

As swedes are swollen stems rather than roots, is it okay to start the off in trays in the greenhouse?  I have never successfully grown swedes from direct sowings, and this year have brought brand new seeds as a last attempt.

we're going to try in fibre pots like our brassicas as they're in the same family  ?  hopefully, they'll miss all the slug attacks etc  ;D

A lady I know who was new to growing anything, grew lovely fat swedes last year by starting them off in pots. She planted them out when they had about half a dozen leaves. I was green with envy when she revealed the fully grown swedes later! Have never managed to grow swedes successfully here so will have a little go at doing some in pots instead of sowing direct and thinning out. It's worth a try.

They can be started in cells, but I've never had much success, My best was sowing late, end of August, had some lovely if smallish swedes over Christmas.

Thanks chaps, yes, I will continue to sow them in cells then and plant them out when they are okay sized plantlets. ;D
