looking round at prices it seems abot £3.50 fo a kilo, with not much difference between earlies and maincrops?

Where did you all buy yours ? Good/bad experiences please.

I have looked at wilko, homebase,  there is also b and q, focus here

and any in the cheaper shops like lidl/aldi etc ?  Id like a good selection, so if anywhere has half kilo lots that would be good.

I have bought mine from 2 places this year. Firstly, I bought 4 varieties from our lottie shop. We sell over a dozen different varieties for one price, £1.95 for 3kg bags. My other 2 varieties a bought from a potato fayre at £2.50 for a 3 kg bag. You could also purchase 1 tuber for 10p at the fayre I think.

All other local shops etc are selling them at £2.95 - £3 for a 3kg bag.

Have you not got a local Allotment Society in your area, ours do seed potatoes at £2.55 for 3kg. They list 45 varieties all of which are certified stock.

Rosyred

Simpson seeds this year which come from Tuckers average price £3.30 3kgs. Last year as first time growers brought from B&Q 2.5kgs bags. Will have to wait till later in the year for results.

Ricado

there is a lottie society, but i am not part of it any more because my allotment is on private ground now.  I must have got the weight wrong as well, i probably saw 3kg bags i think.

I have found a place down here in Dorset that sells spuds loose as many or as few as you want about 40 types, already ordered mine before I found this place so I just got a few odd ones picked 5 lady christl 5 cherie and 5 ratte for £2 . 26p which if you put against trial size bags from T&M is a bargain.

We allow anybody to become a member providing they pay annual subs of £1. They dont have to have an allotment. A large amount of our custom the lottie shop is from non-allotmenteers. Could be worth asking. ::)

can I ask where you order your spuds from for your shop.
We have just opened our shop this year and although too late for spuds haven't been able to find a good source yet. Also do you get them delivered in bulk and weigh them out?

We purchase our spuds from WCS Potatoes in Perth. Having spoke with our chairwoman, she says we only add a small markup on the price. But we sell so many. This year we unloaded over 50 sacks of seed potatoes to sell in our shop.

;DHi Ricado, why don't you do what I do,and that is to buy your potatoes from a large supper market chain like ASDAs,and let them go to seed,I'm into re-using things so what I do is we have people give me potatoes to put into my containers. With this in mind I then either put the whole potatoe into a 6or4or2litre bottomless container or I cut off the bit where there is some growth and put them into my containers, and we eat the rest,I have paid 10p for a 2.5 bag of potatoes this way when they have been reduced in the past, like my herbs for 10p which I've also put into my containers, and they are still alive, plus the fact I can put any thing into my container at any time in all weather too, with the system I,ve got. I hope I've have been of some help as I don't normally post on other topics to do with growing things.but I have been asked too by Alishka.

Oh no, can, worms... anyone?

There was a big thread about using supermarket potatoes JRP, and it's not a good idea because of the risk of virus problems

JRP

;D So what are you saying they are not good to eat,I have no problem with my potatoes, and I haven't for many years now. If I did have I would not suggest what I do to anyone, would I, I'm not like that. Potatoes are one of the easyest things I have ever grown using my system with new potatoes all year round. I can also sometimes eat the seed potatoes I got my new potatoes from too, which would not happen if you grow them in the ground. Please note I've added nothing to my first compost I ever bought and I still get a good crop from what ever I put in. May you and yours and what you grow live long and happy. John. J.R.P.  ;D

Please have a look at http://www.allotments4all.co.uk/joomla/component/option,com_smf/Itemid,28/topic,28344.0 and you might realise that using un-certified seed is not a good idea, for yourself and others

Got the details from our seed potato supplier:
WCF-PHOENIX. We buy at £11.25-£13.25 for a sack of spuds. Some are 20kg but most are 25kg sacks. We sell each variety for £1.95 per 3kg bag regardless.

Web Address: www.wcf-phoenix.co.uk
Tel: 01738 582020   Fax: 01738 582056

All our stock has been excellent from here. Not a bad thing to say about the company. I would highly recommend them for future purchases

I will also try and get some golden wonder as they are fantastic for roast potatoes.  The skins are like that of a russet apples, and really nice when crispy roasties !

Please note there is carriage to pay on top - this isn't too bad if you purchase a full pallet but for small quantities it makes a big difference.

Please also remember to check that the seed is not damp or has started sprouting on receipt - this can be a problem

Ours was delivered palleted as we ordered over 50 sacks. We do sell smaller quantities should customers ask. As previously stated - some people only require 1-2 kg of seed spuds.
