Have prepared a new veggie plot in the back garden, mainly for legumes and salad crops. Just wondered if it mattered which direction my rows run, N-S or E-W ??

I've always been told rows to run N-S as this way they get even light as the sun (sun?  sun?? what sun!?) traverses across the sky during the day

Great ! ..many thanks  :)

I'm very much used to growing cottage garden style, so everything crowded and fighting for light!! Veggie crops obviously require good spacing. May find it hard to adapt, as not used to seeing bare soil !!  ::)  ;D

Don't Worry Magpie!  The rate the weeds grow at will ease your withdrawal - there will come a point at which the sight of bare soil is a pleasure!

My plot has that 'cottage garden' feel about it Di, and the other plot holders think I am a little mad.  I have a block of lettuce and a block of broadbeans, a patch of leeks and a splatter of fennel. I do have rows of spuds, but they are wonky.  They take the mickey, but I don't care, I's a happy Essex girl.  ;D  As for the sun on our plot, we get shade from the willows, apples and plums, so everything has to fight for the right to party!  ;D

Hahaha!! Thanks for that AC !!  ;D

It almost broke my heart to clear out one of the herbaceous beds, but now looking forward to some tasty nibbles from my 15ftx15ft mini veggie plot !  ;D

Right on EJ!  I gow a bit here and a bit there in blocks (I use strip beds across the plot) and I dot in a few flowers here and there to attract the good guys like ladybirds and hoverfly.  I think my fellow ploties are getting used to my eccentric ways as there seems to be fewer comments these days !   ;)

Hey,that's great news AC and EJ !!   ;D
Always thought you had to grow veggies in neat and tidy rows for successful crops! Now I shall squash in as much as I can with companion flowers scattered amongst !!  ;D Hahaha!! Can't be doing with serious gardening, so shall have a fun plot, and even if I only get bent beans and baby beets, I'll be happy!!  ;D
