Hi everyone

haven't posted for a while, been very busy this summer.

Its been my first year with a greenhouse and its been a great success.

Bags of gardeners delights and costalacutto toms( sorry if thats spelt wrong), plenty sweet peppers and even some mild success with the one melon seed I planted ( 4 fruits, ripe but a bit small), about softball size

Anyways, to get to the nub of it.

I grew the costa toms this year but I wondered if others could tell me their favourite beefsteak tom as although I have had great success with the costa I would like to try a new variety next season.

Any recommendations :)

Giant white is a lovely white beefsteak.

My weakness is for the taste of Super Marmande, but have bought seeds of  Supersteak & A N Other (can't remember) to try next year....I like beefsteak toms.

We've grown Supersteak for several years, but it didn't do very well this year.  We have done very well with Brandywine and Black Russian.  I'm not sure if Ferline is a 'beefsteak', but the tomatoes are quite large, and it is supposed to be resistant to blight.  They all tasted (and are still tasting) very good.

Couldn't possibly pick just one

I've grown Dombito both in the GH and outdoors, where the one plant has produced massive fruit. One weighed 870g and all are over 500g and there are 5 still ripening slowly. Sliced across the middle they are a thing of beauty and taste good too. Won't bother to grow them indoors next year.

I bought New Yorker from Anioleka Seeds in the USA before they went silent and they have done very well too - better outdoors than in.

What is a good - tart, fresh tasting - indoor beefsteak tomato?

I've had a yellow oxheart weigh in at 1kg before now, and my Potato Leaf White makes a great beefsteak...

Someone has kindly sent me some seeds for a tomato called Big Beef, which is a US variety.  She recommends it highly, so I shall be trying it next year.

Black Krim - tend to stay a bit too green at  the top, but when you cut into them they are a deep dark red.  Took a bunch of split ones last night and boiled/seived them down to a passata that looks a bit like HP sauce :-\ but tastes brill  :-*

Omar's Lebanese - a huge pink tomato with excellent flavour (so I've heard!); in warmer climates fruits have reached up to 6 pounds each - I think that 10oz - 1 lb tomatoes are a more realistic size in the UK.  They take around 90 days to ripen so need a bit of luck in our summers though?  I have 10 seeds to try out next summer and will see how they do.  If they come good I'll save some and make them available on Swaps.

Carolyn Male's book on heirloom tomato varieties is fantastic, though based on varieties grown in the US.   But it is invaluable if you want to get a sense of the varieties of shapes, tastes,  and colours of the tomatoes that are available out there (and tomatoes that can be regrown from seed you save yourself).

Can anyone recommend a similar book out there which covers European / UK heirloom varieties?  With pretty pictures?

 

If your French is up to it "Les Tomates dans Mon Jardin" Victor Renaud Copyright La Maison Rustique 2000 has pictures and descriptions of 399 different varieties.... I'm not bilingual but with a short glossary of about 40 words I can use it....

Hardback... 13.57 Euros / 89FF.... 9 782706 618055 is the number under the barcode and FX 1805-00-11 seems to be the french equivalent of the ISBN. La Maison Rustique seem to be owned by Flammarion (? publishers?)
