We were woken up last night, in the wee hours, by what I guess was a pair of owls because there was a twit and a twooooo.  We had our window open, but boy was it loud!  They must have been in the trees in the front garden.

Then, another noisy critter - today on the plot I chucked some stuff on the compost heap on plot number 2, which is hidden within an elderberry tree, and I startled a pair of squirrels.  Well, did they ever tell me off, chattering away.  It sounded like one of them was shouting 'Wot Wot Wot' and the otherone was nattering and chattering.

Nature can be very noisy when it wants!

I agree, OH lives on the edge of a wood and on a bad night in spring we had two different types of owls, the twit twoo type and the yearrrrggghhhhh ones, woodpeckers sorting out territory, squirrels, cats fighting, frogs and a car alarm.  At least the M6 near me is a steady restful rumble   ;D
is it in the sale?

@ froglets -  ;D ;D ;D

When I had a static caravan, you wouldn't believe the number of people who used to complain about squirrels running along the roof of their vans during the night.

My goodness - we were in the middle of the country!!!!

Sometimes for us the noisiest thing is the sea.  Not the calming washing of the waves on the beach or the fabulous crashing when it's choppy...on some nights when you've noticed the sound it becomes a long continuous wall of white noise. It's quite strange, especially as I can't actually see it from where my house is.

I always remember when we stayed on the seafront at Scarborough - blooming seagulls, couldn't sleep for the things.

The twit twoo ones will be Tawnies; the sound is made by two calling to each other across the territorial boundary. Tawnies do scream, but the really bloodcurdling shrieks are Barn Owls.

I thought the males were the twits and the females the yearrrrggghhhhh ones  ;D

We had some loud "Twits" last night - amazingly loud - have never had anything like that before.  Sadly there was no Twoo.

Maybe it is a young owl who has just moved into our garden?  I do hope so.  I will be listening again tonight.
Any ideas to encourage him/her?
