Is this BER and is it the same cause as in tomatoes?

no, this happens when the squash doesnt get pollinated.
as in, a male flower wasnt around at the time when the female was ready.

nothing you can do about it,  it simply falls off the plant as it's not viable.

Had an unusual number of Courgettes doing it this season.

You also get BER on Peppers & Aubs.

I've had a lot of squashes dropping off as well, and I'm wondering whether it's anything to do with the drought.
