Fair 'mazin, Eric - & to think that, as a kid, I used to put them in my collection!!

fantastic - have only ever seen them when on holiday in France.  Do you think they are around as far north as Lincoln?

Palustris

Looking at the map we are nearly as far north as Lincoln, but a little further West. They should be found anywhere where there is plenty of Fireweed (?Lythrum) as hat is their caterpillars food. They are not as common now as they were though.

They feed on Lady's Bedstraw (Galium verum); I'm used to 'fireweed' as an American term for what I would normally call willowherb. Shows how confusing common names can be!

I don't know how to do a link...on page two Yuet Lee asked if anyone could name an insect, it turned out to be a hummingbird hawkmoth. Thing is, I had not ever seen one before but as you will read...one appeared in my garden much to my amazement shortly after Yuet posted! I'm way up on the North East coast!

Haven't seen another but I'm keeping a watch!

To post a link ...

Copy the link (I copy in the address bar) then select the earth button on the reply page (called Hyperlink) and paste the link into the middle ...

your text should look like this ... (I have inserted a space in the code to make it visible)

Hope this helps  :)

Ours love Aquilegia & Buddleia.

CotswoldLass

Tim, my best friend in the Cotswolds has them, yet to see them in the Hampshire haven though. Dragonflies, yes.

We're in Stoke-on-Trent and our garden has, for the past two years, been visited by this lovely creature.

In previous years, we've tried to capture it on camera, but to no avail.
It's only this year that we've identified it as being a Hummingbird Hawk Moth.

Here's a link to my Dearly Beloved's Blog (with reference to the moth's appearance)

Saw one in our garden in Surrey last week. Never seen one before and have now seen lots on Honeysuckle in mum-in-laws garden in Devon.
