A frustrating week

Some of you may have noticed i have been absent of late. Unfortunately this was not due to a holiday or being too busy in the garden (though I have been), it has been due to a lack of internet connection which has prevented me accessing A4ALL. An unnnesesary lack of internet connection at that.

Maybe this should be in the Internet and computing section of the site, but I think more of you will see it posted here.

I get my internet via AOL. About a month ago we got a laptop and wireless modem and set up a home network. It worked fine for about 3 weeks then during the evening of last bank Holiday Monday we were abruptly disconnected and were unable to reconnect. After trying various 'repairs' I contacted AOL to be told there was a technical problem in my area and to keep trying to connect, which I did to no avail for several days. Further calls to AOL followed to be told the same thing.

I would still be in the same position now were it not for a chance meeting with a chap who runs a computer shop in my town. His technician advised removing the wireless modem and reconnecting the old modem, and then trying to connect. Which to my anger and frustration it did straight away, proving that there was NOT a technical problem in my area. I now have internet (of sorts) back.

Problem now is I still want the internet on the laptop so the wireless system has to be fixed somehow. I know the actual eqiupment is OK and is designed to work on AOL, so it appears the problem is with AOL not me.

I will be putting a post on the internet/PC forum, so i am not realy looking for answers here. I just wanted to share my problem with you, in part to explain my absence and also to se if anyone else has has similar probelms with AOL recently.

I once had a problem with AOL, but I managed to get onto one of their forums (you can always do it via an internet cafe if all else fails), discovered it was affecting other people, and posted a message suggesting that we take legal action for breach of contract. The problem was solved within 24 hours. You could always try it; it's a recurring problem because they never want to invest in more modems as the number of people using the service grows, so you end up having problems connecting. Then you try a different route, people have moved on from using it, and you get in first try. It's just pennypinching on their part.

Interetsing info there robert. Thanks. Next thing to try i guess is to post a message on thier forum (without the threat to sue at this stage!). Might bring the problem to someones attention. When you go on thier 'Live Help' chatroom they always take the attitude that the problem is with you and not AOL.

I've posted a link to my oter posting on this in the 'Internet/PC' forum:
