I have run out of room in my greenhouse and wondered whether anyone has successfully grown aubergines outside in England.  The plants are now big and healthy being about 8 or 9 inches tall.  I have not got a south facing wall though so will they still produce fruit in the vegetable plot?

In Wiltshire you should be laughing! Given a windbreak, & cover if it gets nasty.

I can only speak for the long variety, but our 8 plants in growbags, 650' up, gave us close on 100 fruit.

Thanks Tim, I will put some of them out then to relieve room in my greenhouse.  ;)

I tried Aubergines outside last year but I think I was too late sowing them so they only got as far as the flower stage.  This year I'm hoping for more success.

I have grown long thai green, on an external window-ledge.

I live on the Lincs/Cambs border and they do well outside as long as I give them some tunnel cloche protection for the first couple of weeks or so

Tim,

wow 100 fruits sounds great.
Just to be clear are yours outside?
Do you do anything else to them?

I grew them outside last year, did nothing to them and got lots of small fruits to use at the time but I'd love to have an excess for freezing etc.

I would love to have an excess, if such a thing exists ... I would then attempt to make some baba ghanouj - roast aubergine paste, similar to Hummous.

Secondly, is Mamta's pickle in this forum, or if not, can you assist with a link ?
The impossible is just a journey away ...

Google Mamta - her kitchen - lovely Lady! See my devilled chicken!!

I grew aubergines outside last year, against wall of house south facing. I have put them out this year already with fingers crossed, as going away in a couple of days. Some are already begining to flower. They are my best plants so far this year,I cannot believe how easy they are to grow.

my aubs do really well outside (under a cloche) and i live in the high peak!
It'll be better next year

Really impressed with all you people successfully growing aubergines, especially outside.  I will try again next year.

What seeds do you recommend?
Where do you get them from?

Many thanks

Robert_Brenchley

I'm trying them for the first time; they sulked for a while but they seem to be growing at last. Whether they'll produce anything remains to be seen. Same with the peppers.

I'm growing black beauty here in Spain, put them outdoors 3 weeks ago and they are now taking off!!!!!  They like humidity so I've placed a litre bottles beside each plant.

wow - I am impressed you can get your aubergines to grow at all!! Mine are still inside on the window ledge. Got their second set of leaves, so potted on into 3 inch pots and they now appear to have put the breaks on.... nothing for about 2 weeks. Any suggestions gratefully recieved!

tim

Things are being stupidly slow this year.

Were their roots filling the smaller pots?
How long were they in those pots?

daisymay

they took about 3 weeks to germinate and then were in the seed tray plug for a further couple of weeks. The root had not completely filled the pot, but I needed the space to be honest so I potted them on...... was this the wrong thing to do?
