.....Or similar mulch

Do you do this and if so what do you grow in this way?

I normaly use this f ;Dor potatoes, but this year I have tired it with my cabbages. I hope it means they will need less watering, weeding and dont bolt like my spring ones did!

Anyone got any tips for growing veg in this way?

PS I actualy use porous landsacape fabric rather than plastic but the effect is the same i guess except watering is easier. ;D

i've used it for sprouts broccoli cabbages and cauli, in the hope i won't have to weed that area. they look happy enough, but its the first time this year for me too.

Garden Cadet,

I would be suprised that a choice of mulch would cause spring cabbages to bolt. That's more likely down to temperature/variety?

I am going over to a partial no dig method but I am using cardboard as a mulch.  I use a bulb planter to go through that and into the soil and then (with brassicas) use the circular bit of cardboard as a biodegradable collar round the stem.  Still digging for my potatoes and legumes though.

No No, It wasnt the mulch but lack of retained moisture that was part of the problem. Inother works the plants were too dry. I figure that using a mulch will help keep the soil moist/damp and thus reduce likelyhood of bolting.

I hope this clears this matter up.
