Last month I sowed 8 cucumber seeds in a propogator waited till they were 5-6 inch high, then planted them in huge pots in growbag compost. They are in an unheated greehouse & all of them have drooped over....... They have been watered regular.

What have I done wrong???? Should I buy more seed & try again???  ???

Thanks

Hey RC.

Sounds like you may have been a bit eager to put them unheated? They hate the cold, and sudden temperature fluctuations.

Not too late to try again! Good luck.  :)

How many true leaves did they have when they went out?

Were they fully rooted in 3" pots?

Have you had a frost?

Mine dooped over and then I realised they are supposed to climb up sticks ??? ::) :P ;D

Mine have been in a mini greenhouse for a wekk or so, and look perfectly healthy. The only casualties are some of the sunflowers, which have been bitten through, apparently by slugs, and one tomato which suffered the same fate. The sunflowers were on the bottom shelf where they were vuilnerable, but I still have about three.

tim

Rosemary - they should be self-supporting until they are about 12" high.

How many true leaves did they have when they went out? - They had 3 true leaves

Were they fully rooted in 3" pots? Yes

Have you had a frost? No, its been quite cold but no frost here in the midlands.

I thought the same as Rosemary, maybe they were supposed to droop over but if they are self-supporting until they are about 12" I had best get some more seed & try again.

Does anyone have any ideas on varieties for indoor & out door???

Thanks

Cucumbers can be funny like that, sometimes they look perfectly healthy then just yurn up their toes and die on you, have it happen quite a few time, best to grow more these than you need.

Varieties, redcow? For Indoors Reply 18 http://www.allotments4all.co.uk/joomla/component/option,com_smf/Itemid,57/topic,19082.0

For Outdoors - the good old Burpee - but there are many.

Drooping? My only thoughts, then, are that

a. they were too drawn up, &

b. that they were over-watered. I don't give mine water for a week after planting.

On the subject of cucumbers -  mine are still indoors as I thought it would be too cold to transfer them to the coldframe but they are flowering so I don't really know what to do about germination  :(    Treat them like chillies and germinate by hand?  But I gather some cucumbers have both sexes and others only one, so it's all very confusing!!  Well, to me  :-[
Varieties btw are Long White and Lemon Crystal.
Very grateful for any thoughts  :)

Tim, when you say you dont water them for a week after planting, can you clarify wether you water first to settle them in or that you dont water at all for a week. if youget my drift?
