Allotments 4 All

Hello,

Last friday after reading the other sweetcorn thread I kind of panicked and sowed 32 seeds in rootrainers on a heated propagator, and covered them before going away for the weekend. When I got back from work on monday evening and opened the lid, the seedlings were anywhere from 4cm all the way up to about 8 cm in length!!! with no leaves, just long stems. They were slightly pale green towards the bottom half, with the top half looking quite healthy green. Are they going to be ok? is it normal for them to spring to life so quickly? I've topped up the seedlings with some more compost as some of the seeds were popping out of the compost as I'd only just covered them with a small layer of when I sowed them. They're now sitting outside in a heated coldframe.

Should I resow??

They should be OK, dont chill them to much and give them plenty of light.

I have not sown as yet, still a little early for me. Will sow Easter Monday I expect.

Hello - I too have sowed the sweetcorn .

Anyone know how big should they be and wen do I plant them outside ?

What you're describing is a longer version of what I have as mine come up. I think they'll be OK.

I have not sown mine yet as I try to work it so that they are OK to plant just as the small pots get full of root,then they do not check but just keep growing.Do not forget that to get a good crop you do need to plant in a block rather than a row.This is because you need to get the pollen from the high tassels down onto the cob fibres to pollinate and if they are in a row the pollen can be blown away

Would you reccomend I re-sow another batch later on? as it's way too cold to plant them out still and at the rate they're growing, it won't be long before they get pot bound. Or should I look to plant them out under cover as soon as they are ready to give them a longer growing season? What are others doing who have already sown their sweetcorn?

I do not know what your weather is like at the moment,we had 7 inches of snow Sunday night and it is still on the ground but if your weather is more settled and you can give some protection (fleece) then I would plant them out rather than let them get pot bound.
