:)I have just spotted a high street source from Thursday 20th April at Lidl.
Insect netting 5m by 2m for £5. Lots of other gardening stuff as well.

Bought mine from the organic gardenng catalogue. 10% off for HDRA members.

I bought ultra-fine enviromesh this time - it is about the right size for one of my raised beds and will go over one lot of brassicas to stop the poor things getting eaten to death by the flea beetles.  My old mesh (which suffered horribly after it got bounced on by some four and two-legged fiends) gets doubled up (so none of the pulled holes overlap!) and put over the maincrop carrots.  What carrot fly? :) :)

You can also get it direct from Agralan though their prices seem to be the same as everyone else's except they don't show the VAT which makes them a lot dearer!!!
And they make it!

Course the cheapest option is your local jumble sales. Old close-woven net curtains!!!

Can standard fleece be used to protect carrots from carrot fly? I've got plenty of fleece left over and would hate to have to spend more cash more material.

How do you find out in advance what Lidl's are doing? I've been onto their website but it doesn't show 20th April.

I found out as I regularly visit one of their stores, where they have leaflets giving details of their special offers for the next week to 10 days. It is amazing how much they have for gardeners. Over the last couple of months they have had clothes, shoes, boots, tools for gardeners, all at very keen prices. When the Lidl store just down the road from our allotments, had gardening special offers, you could hardly move at opening time for your neighbouring plotters buying up the bargins!

Yes it can, but the problem is watering. Fleece takes ages to get wet before water gets through and tends to run off a fair bit.  And then it can stay very humid underneath before it dries off. Good conditions for various fungi in summer. Net is more sievelike.  If you're going to leave it on all season then net's probably better.
