I was digging today and just thinking the soil is warming up, the worms are surfacing again and the they are again getting active... then suddently I thought I was hallucinating...

I didn't believe it... I thought worms laid eggs, but no, they give birth to live worms, and today I watched one... As I dug the soil, I bent down to rescue a worm, when I saw one small worm clung it it, suddenly there were two, and just as I thought my eyes were decieving me  ::) a third popped out.  I watched in stunned silence, then picked her up with her babies and put them safely back under some turned over soil  ;D

I still didn't believe what I had witnessed, so came home, did a google search, and yep, I did see what I thought I saw!  Poor worm, I disturbed her in her moment of privacy.  But I do feel priveleged to witness such an event.  ;D

The benefits of having an allotment are sometimes very diverse  ::) or maybe I am just "sad" at getting excited at seeing this "at my age" - Oh and I have always liked worms; I used to be the school kid to pick up worms for my classmates, when we had to find them  ;)

Mat, I would ahve done the very same.  Aint nature wonderful ??

OH was once digging in our Rose plot and dug up a field voles nest.  He didn't know what to do with them all.  He shouted on me to see them all and I carefully put them all back again, into the soil enclosed in their little nest.

That sounds to have been a very lucky moment Matt! When i used to live in Devon some years ago one of my cats once brought into the house a live "slow worm". I  had never seen one before and ran out of the house and got the old man across the road. I thought it was a snake! He could barely stand up for laughing afterwards. :-[
