Having kindly fed the large colony of sparrows that live in my hedges, they are now in the process of destroying my collection of pulmonarias. They have eaten all the leaves and set about the flower buds. I am used to them eating all the primrose flowers and having a peck at yellow winter pansies but I have never had this happen before. Has anyone else experienced this and other than netting does anyone have a solution?.

We put down holly clippings to keep the birds off our newly planted onions last year.  It worked but then you may not have a tree in which to cut the holly from!    :)

Paulines7, thanks. It may not work with these sparrows, they live in a holly hedge. :D

Get hold of a lifelike cat or snake and put it in the tree.

The sparrows have a great time in our Wisteria eating all the leaf and flower buds but it still alwasy flowers and gets a full head of leaves so I just let them get on with it.  They are in decline after all.

Hi redclanger, these pulmonarias have been completely destroyed, they have no leaves and though they may reappear next year they will not flower this year. I know the sparrows have been in decline, which is why I feed them, niether do I mind them taking every yellow spring flower in the garden but this business with the pulmonarias has annoyed me but even more it has interested me because they have never touched them before. ???

I have a large resident colony of sparrows in my garden every day and they have never eaten any of my plants except for yellow crocuses.  I have lots of pulmonaria and it's never been touched.  Seems bizarre to me.  Sorry I can't help but I do sympathise.

my yellow crocuses are the only flowers out atm, and my sparrows totally ignore them even though the feeders are right by those pots ........ and long may it continue.
