Allotments 4 All

Winter is definately here.  I have just had the first visit from a Brambling which came in along with a flock of greenfinches and chaffinches.  Its a bonny bird and much like a chaffinch except its colouring is a bit brighter and seems to be a more apricot colour on its body and more stripes on the wing.  Anyone else had a visit from this 'winter' visitor.   

I don't get them here Carol nor do I see chaffinches very often.  You are very fortunate to have such a lovely visitor.  What was his excuse for not being there on Bird Count day?

Apparently, the chaffinch is the most common bird in Scotland.  Well it is in my garden.  I had about 30 feeding today.   :P :P :P

I remember going to Glen Nevis and chaffinches feeding from our hands in the car park there.

The chaffinch always used to be the commonest bird in England; I don't know whether that's still the case.

According to the RSPB Birdwatch result from 2005, the House sparrow is still the most common bird in England.  I only have one visiting at the moment. He comes along with all the Chaffinches!!!! but he wasnt here on sunday for the Bird Count.

I wonder whether that's because it's really commoner, or because it's found round human habitation, and that biases the survey.

I have loads of sparrows (resident in my eaves) and assorted tits and chaffinches that visit my garden every day.  The chaffinches are fairly recent arrivals from nearby woods who discovered my bird restaurant only last winter.  Some of them are much brighter than the others but i assumed it was just a male/female difference.  Now I'll have to have a closer look in case there are bramblings too.   All very well but I'm supposed to be busy sewing a new frock for dancing while the paint dries on the kitchen cupboard doors............
