Hi folks just been doing a bit of lurking.  ;D

Ok I have a sunflower question. Hope it is not in the wrong section.

My quicky question is do you need to stake tall sunflowers?

Thanks

Definitely stake them, even the smaller multi headed ones will flop over in windy weather.

YEs you see fields of them in France upright and perky but the first really windy day or heavy rain and they are all at 45 degrees.

And don't tie the ties to tightly as they will cut through the stem, and you will come home day to see poor severed sunflowers.  :'(

All the sunflower growers on my site stake them well. I should think they need it; Jerusalem artichokes are sunflowers, and they end up flopping all over the place.

Hi  following on from E.J re ties have just read that good ties can be made from strips cut from old T.shirts as they do not cut into stems.Hope this helps but beware who's T.shirt you pinch.
