Allotments 4 All

was wondering of any of you guys have some sort of heating in your sheds..... one drawback we have is no electricity.  Have looked on the 'net to see if i could find something battery operated, and then I wondered about a parafin lamp?!? (I know they are not too safe, but would only be used while we were there...)

Any other suggestions?

Sheona, this is not the cheapest one available on ebay but it's the only one that gives the full light/heat output equivalents. Hope the info is of some use.  :)

Calor gas heater for me...to answer the question Sheona!  ::)

You can get catalytic heaters that run on LPG -less fumes. You have to be a bit carefull with them as they give out 'black heat' -i.e no flame so it can be difficult to tell if it's on.

Also various heaters that run off camping gaz. Search on google turned up loads -mainly from caravanning and camping places.

Thanks for the info everyone! BUT, having thought about it, my aunty has a couple of tilly(?) lamps that are not being used in a cupboard somewhere..... I'll ask her nicely if I can rehome them..... (When I was wee I used to lock myself in her shed and light them, always had a fascination with 'things' and used to ratch round the shed for hours  ??? .... was nice and warm too!)

yes they are wonderful lamps, when they are alight, they feel 'alive' for want of a word ...

It is not just the Tilley Lamps, it is getting hold of the paraffin as well, anyone got any red diesel ... ?

theres a wee petrol station just round the corner from where we live thats sells paraffin...   ;) and it's only £3.75 for a 3L drum...  ;D

This one sells all sorts of bits and pieces of agricultural stuff as well in a wee side shop... and they only had a few containers through the back of the shop... maybe they weren't supposed to and only selling off old stock on the side??? Will need to find out... ???

I would definitely recommend a Tilley lamp for heat and light, we take our two to our car club international meeting and happily light and heat two large-ish gazebos without any trouble.

In fact, if the Tilley lamps will run ok on diesel, then I would suggest cooking oil is cheaper, I remember running some diesel engines on mazola once, just for fun !!! A bit smoky, and they certainly didn't have the power, but it was just to demonstrate that it can be done. This was a demonstration for military use, and our client (the MoD) were well pleased with the outcome ...

Perhaps a mix of diesel and vegetable oil would be best, as the oil would be thicker, and may not wick out quite so readily ...

Coo they are really s'pensive aren't they?  We run our cub ones on meths.  I went into a 24 hour garage to ask if they sold bottles of meths (thinking they do bbq coal so .......?) and they pointed me to the vodka.  Didn't think I looked that rough !!

I remember paying £10 for myTilley years back; I still haveit hanging in the shed. I needed it every winter in Cornwall since the power always went down at some point.
