Hi,
Has anyone any idea or know what seed to use to grow pickling onions..
I have let white lisbon etc bulb up but this is then like a silverskin which i didnt want..
I have grown silverskin onions but the one I am  looking for when grown gives an onion similar in size or slightly larger than the onion sets we sow ..Like the ones we can buy for pickling..I have never seen any seeds that produce  a dwarf type onion  has anyone else...cheers Jim

You can pickle any onion if you take them up small or you might try barletta from seeds of italy. I really would recommend shallots though, perfect.

And watch the thread below, growmore.

Yep, agree entirely about shallots !  Tastier and 'rustic' beats Silverskin every time.  We have found Golden Gourmet fits the bill - just the job

I was originally intending to grow some silverskin onions for pickling, but the way this thread is going, it looks like shallots might be the way to go ...

I'm going to put in an order for Golden Gourmet.  PS How many approx do you get in a kilo?

Not sure how many per kilo,  but I usualy buy  1 lb  from my local Allotment Association for 50p ,  which  is easily enough sets for my 15 foot row.
30 sets could potentialy give you 200  shallots !   Time to buy shares in Sarsons !

Yep, Grandma always used to buy shallots for pickling.

But there's no need to panic buy, I think Tuckers will be delivering in January with the potatoes. Yes their book says plant 2nd half of Feb through to end of April.

Approx 15 sets in their 400gm pack.

(I'm glad I'm not in Gloucestershire today, though a good log fire would be good.)
Cheers

Just muddling along, trying various crops, styles etc, will repeat what works. Will try again what doesn't!!
Photo is of me ballet dancing or is it watering the strawberries?
