I would say, if they are slightly tender, get them wrapped, or covered, or protected however you can.  I am planning to move the last of my pots into the conservatory over the weekend, along with any good strong chilli plants from the greenhouse to provide me with peppers over the winter.  I haven't dug up my dahlias as they seem to keep going, but this weekend I will be cutting them down and chucking a good few inches of compost on the top of them, same with anything else I am unsure of.  Do you have lots of fleece????

Bambi.1

Thanks for the reply EJ,

l've used all my fleece on my Avacado and lemon trees, and have put my smaller plants already in the greenhouse.

Unfortantely my palms are rather large and would need a ladder for a couple, but l would hate to lose them  :'(

Bambi I am leaving mine where they are and risking it, the ones I have are supposed to be frost hardy. GOT to wrap my banana today, been so busy the poor garden has been rather neglected!
I would say depends on the palm and where you live.

A Banana tree sounds lovely and exotic Doris,is it large ?

I live on the border of Bedfordshire and Milton Keynes.

I've put this pic on here before,l know a couple are Cordilines.

They have grown a bit since this was taken.

My cordeline is huge too! I haven't done anything to it since it was a baby, back then I used to wrap twine around it's leaves to keep the worst weather from rotting the growing tip, I am hoping with size comes hardiness!

Me narna is a big un, should have been wrapped up for the winter by now, it is my MUST DO job for the weekend, was hoping to do it today but as per usual got sidetracked.
Here she is!

Bet she looks a lot sadder than that now though!
If you remind me via PM in the spring, you are more than welcome to one of her babies.  She is a musa basjoo, so very hardy over here.

I have the same dilemma. To lift or not to lift...
I planned to leave my cannas in the ground this winter. I've lost some before, but those weren't mulched. This year I've covered the rhizomes with lots bracken.  I would be sad to loose them as it's a nice variety with bronze leaves and it has grown into quite a big clump.

My soil is clay; would it be wise to cover the bracken with plastic to keep the wet off?

Wow!!!! she is a beauty  :o ;D l do hope she survives the winter Doris, and a baby would be terrific,Thank You  :-* Awwwww hurry up Springtime  ;) ;D

Good luck with your Cannas,Dandelion.

Doris_Pinks

Dandelion I wouldn't go with plastic, how about a double layer of fleece?
I left cannas in the ground last year and covered them with a thick mulch of manure, they re-appeared and actually did just as well as the ones I took in!

You will have to remember to PM me Bambi ;D

What I did was to pull out the step ladders and percariasly tye all the leaves up into a big sausage like structure, or like a pole. I uve string to tye it all together. Is you want extra protection I would use some of the misses old tights. I emphersis the word OLD!  ;D

if you can the best way to protect tree ferns etc if to wrap the main stems etc in a layer of straw secured by a Hessian sack to stop jack frost killing them
