Allotments 4 All

Here are a few pics of my spring cabbage plants which are supposed to be for next Spring,  well the first pic is tonight's dinner and l do not hold much chance of the other cabbage holding out until next year. A severe Winter will kill it of as it is way to forward,  I shall have to revise my planting days for the seed.

about 1500 plants set out in this pic. The only positive thing to look at is that if they do not last until next year l shall not have to use any fertilizer on them

1500 cabbages???? What are you planning on doing with all of those?

They are fab.  I think netting them is the key.

Yes Rosyred some will be sold, and I have to keep them netted Lily because of the wood pigeons.  Selling a few of the cabbages and other produce helps towards the cost of seeds, fertilizer, cow muck etc.

I seem to think that somewhere in my allotment t & c we are not allowed to sell what we grow.  I doubt that I would be able to grow enough to sell anyway. And certainly not in the wonderful condition that you've grown yours. :)

I think the legal definition of an allotment means you can't sell anything - but what they do not know...

Sell 'a few' - leaving only 3.97 a day for the next year?? Recipes please!

A wonderful display! As said elsewhere - fleece them well & you have a hope?

This summer I had a mind to sell excess produce at the end of the garden gate.  I'm a bit shy  :-[ so didn't bother, I gave the stuff away.  Whats the worst that could happen - no-one buy them. 

They would have to be in good condition - Organic produce going cheap ! :) .  Can we call it organic though , what's the rule on Organic.  I could call them 'Allotment Grown'  I will give it a go next season.  Perhaps just make enough to buy more seeds. ;D   ;D

Our allotment site is not now run by the council so rules regarding selling produce does not apply to us. I have to sell a few things to help towards the rent, seed, fertilizer, etc. I have now taken on about 9 allotments that were all overgrown and neglected, I have up until about 2 month ago dug them all with a fork and spade, a lot of hard work but boy did I enjoy it, there were many days when i was chopping down 10 foot high brambles, thinking to myself what the bl**dy hell was I doing here, but I carried on regardless and am now reaping the rewards. No veg now as to be brought from the shops and it is all nice and fresh and so enjoyable. Like you lily all I want to do is to recover my costs.

Where do you find the time to look after 9 plots.  :o

Lilly, I had a little stall at the end of the house, never made much, bout £3-4 a day, sometimes more, often lot less!! But word soon got round and people love it!! Don't be shy, you'll meet loads of people and they do say nothing ventured nothing gained!! One word of caution though, secure your cash box ::)!! I was too trusting and had it stolen. Luckily peeps just knocked on door for veg.

Hmmmm Cannot  sell good that are grown on your allotment. In my theory, you cannot sell from your plot or site. But if you have a little market stall then you could always sell them from there. Any way my farther always said to me that he was told by his mother to go down the allotments and get a cabbage and some rhubarb. He used to pay the plot holders who he had them off a few bob or the od penny or two and they used to put it towards there seeds for the next years crop. They where not making money they where just making a cover for the next years crop of goodies.

I don't sell my surpluss stuff.  I take it into work and ask for donations towards seed fund.  Can't see any harm in that.

I try and barter as much as I can, I give jam and veg to the guys at the local saw mill in exchange for loads and loads of black plastic and wood off cuts for my wood burner, swap veg for manure with farmer, i give some of the black plastic to other lottie holders who than give me seeds/plants. The girls at work get veg which scores me brownie points (I'm still waiting for the pay rise! ;D)
Just to clarify, the plastic is for the lottie not the wood burner ;D ;D
