was gonna try sowing my swede in cells ,then  planting out to try stop flea beetle attack this year.just wondering if anyone else tried this ::) :P

Some garden centres sell swedes in modules (as well as beetroot, lettuce, leeks, spring onions, brassicas.....) Could be worth ago.

Have just sown a row of swedes but I think I will do some in modules as a back up.

I have always found my ground sown swedes decimated by various bugs. I will try the module method as well! ;D

Most of the books you read advise you not to grow root veg in modules, but reading of peoples success on here i'm begining to wonder.

Always do mine in modules too! The club root is my biggest problem with them  >:(

Tut, tut - you're not supposed to grow swedes in modules, or transplant them from a seed bed.  ;)

Hey, but it does work, so I'm not knocking it - they seem to be quite a bit more resilient than booksgive them credit for :)

Never had any success, have sown direct, and covered with fresh potting compost.  If they don't do the doo this year, then doo the bin!

just been offered a number of swede seedlings (he chucked last year's seeds in between his potatoes not expecting them to come up - and they all have - so can grab me some from his seed 'bed')- are they brassicas then? haven't given them much thought, tbh. i still have some space in the brassica bed (says she hopefully) so could plant me a few. spacing? size of adult plant?
and just what do you actually do with swedes?

Mashed with spuds and cheese or carrot and swede mash.  I've only ever had em that way so praps am missing out.  Swede cake, swede frappe  ;D

Swedes shuld be treated as brassica in terms of rotation so THEY say.
What sort of module container's are we talking about not just loo rolls I guess?

Great in soups and stews - I use them wherever I might use a spud, but I treat all root veggies that way!  Have a nice double row up - pleased as I have never managed them before, but the flea beetle has been at them.  Have no fleece left thanks to my rows and rows of carrots, so will have to use derris me thinks.  :-\

I planted out swedes some time ago ( didn't write it down ???). but today one of the four was looking a bit flat. I have pulled it up and its about the size of a really large tennis ball, I haven't cut it yet as I have been looking through recipes for suggestions. There are a couple of marks in the sides, would these be Flee beetle or is that quite normal. I don't want to cut it open and find it full of grubs!!
