Do you know why it was orphaned?
Sometimes Robins leave the youngsters for quite a while in undergrowth etc. while they feed themselves and return much later.

I was thinking this too.  Some parents can leave their bambinos unattended for quite a wee while but still come back.

MagpieDi, how long has your pal had this little cutie?  I'm wondering, if it hasn't been too long, whether it's worth popping it back for mum to find?

he/she is gorgeous !!!  It looks like a baby robin - YP is quite right, robins do that, go away for hours and return much later.

Thanks for your concern and suggestions everyone. However, the nest was pulled to bits by a cat, and one parent and 2 siblings were found dead.   :(     The little fella was just a tiny half-bald nestling, too young to leave the nest. My friend has been nurturing him round the clock, and now he's beginning to feed himself, and try his wings out !  ;D   
Dot has had about 30 years experience of hand rearing various wildlife casualties, and breeds all sorts of ducks, hens, geese, quail etc. She's an absolute ANGEL !!  ;D  I just LOVE visiting her smallholding !  ;D

So lucky your friend was present to find & take care of him.

Thanks for taking an interest in the little scallywag Sam   ;D    Good news !  He's now very cheeky, very lively, and very chirpy, but fortunately for Dot, is sleeping through the night !!   ;D   Apparently he won't develop red breast feathers until the autumn. Here's a pic of him today looking very c o c k y !!   :D
