mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm can taste that creamy flesh already!

Do you need to let the flowers die off, or can you start to lift them whilst in flower ? Just pull one and check ??

legless

last year i started lifting when they were in flower, before it died off, but i suppose you can lift and check if they are big enough for you.

i'm so excited, i couldn't believe what they tasted like last year, i'd never had freshly dug potatoes before!

tim

Don't pull one, DD - just put your fingers in.

My method for harvesting spuds is to wait until the flowers start to die off and then cut the haulm to about 2" off the ground and water the rows. I lift them 2/3 weeks after that.

One of my Red Duke of Yorks has flowers just opening.

I looked in my diary last night - I only planted it six weeks ago. Dr H. says 13 weeks for earlies - it's only have that time.

Is that possible?
gone to pot :D

some of my first early tub spuds are in bud - but it is in one of those "posh" barrels where you can push up the sides to see if there are any tubers (it was a gift!)

In the pictures advertising the barrels there are loads of spuds - in mine - just lots of roots - not a tuber in sight... I'm now not convinced that flowers are a reliable indicator!
