I have come across 8 bags of old soot at the top of one of my allotments, could someone please tell me what it is good for and how much to apply to the ground.

Richard, where you been? Not seen you around for a while!
I have just put soot around my lettuces, have heard tell it keeps the slugs away, will know tomorrow morning! ;D  (this was the soot scraped from my chimney when I cleaned it out for the summer!)
Having said that, if it is ashes from the fire, they say not to put it in the ground if it has had coal burnt in it, so woodstove stuff is good.......hope this helps :) DP

Soot is very acidic  - may be it was used round brassicas.  My dad always used it but it's a tad messy  :)
I came, I saw, I composted

I have used it when I have sown Radish, I love radish but so do the cabbage root fly, I have found it helps to deter them.

3 days on and my lettuces are still there, maybe it works!
