I've planted seeds in toilet rolls for the first time this year.  They haven't germinated yet, but the toilet rolls have started to sprout a white fluffy mould on them.
I had them in a homemade propagator, but have now removed the lid as I assumed the mould was due to the air being to humid.
Does anyone know whether the mould will affect the seedlings when they eventually emerge, or should I try and repot the seeds now?  I only planted them about a week ago.

You should be ok, it's happened to me again this year and the seedlings are all up. Wasn't a problem previous years either.

Thanks Jeremy, that's a relief  :)

Think it depends on the brand you know.  Some of mine were mouldy and fragile in days, others were like new when I planted them out!  I don't think it is a problem, but just keep an eye on the dampness.

I have seen mould on the rolls too of my carrots and peas, the card was quite tough and I cut slits up them before planting, was I wasting my time then? ???

Oh! and they all germinated ;D

Charlotte Sometimes

Yup.  I got the mould too.  Plant sweetcorn, get free mushrooms!  Nice!  :P ;D

Mine too!
Nothing to worry about though as it has almost disappeared now I've started to stand them outside to harden off the plants.
BTW my runner beans which are planted in these tubes all germinated upside down - roots out the top. The leaves eventually emerged through the sides of the tubes but all look remarkably well for their extra effort.
Granny is still your best friend !

i also planted lots of seeds in toilet rolls which show no sign as yet of decomposing even though some with garlic have been in the ground for several weeks now.  Am worried that, as some were cut -down kitchen rolls they are more resilient...does anyone have any ideas?

So long as they're plain cardboard there shouldn't be a problem, if they've a coating then that's different. Make sure that they're damp or even wet when you plant them.

Roy, are you sowing carrots singly in the rolls or multiple?

Is that for exhibition ones or general?

Would spraying with Cheshunt compound cure the mould?

I have sprinkled seed very finely maybe too fine as a couple of rolls have no sign of life :o I am too much a newbie to be putting my efforts in exhibitions :-[ ;D

I sow as little as I can get away with because I am tight  :)  Scratch that I am just a bit skint really with three kids.

The mould and mushrooms on the loo rolls doesn;t matter.  it just makes them look more interesting  ;D

Mine are fine since they've got out into the cold frame (well, I say frame er ..) and the mushrooms and mould are gone  :)
I came, I saw, I composted
