Cold weather coming...

Just looked at my favourite weather forecasting site (www.metcheck.com), much better than the Beeb IMHO.

They're forecasting a hard frost in Southern areas on Friday night (assuming it will as cold or colder at all points North). 

Just thought I'd let people know so we've all got a few evenings to make sure we've covered up anything planted during that glorious weekend!!

Thanks for the warning - I'll have to earth up my bucket spuds or cart them inside!

(Probably the latter - not much point in having nice handled buckets otherwise)

Very sunny today  8) BUT Snow forcast for Northumberland on Thursday :-[ Plus freezing temperatures !!!
I was tempted to sow loads of seeds over the last few days but held back, I think I might just have done the right thing.

Possibly the same 'raw data', but the trick is in the forecasting algorithms etc, I am led to believe!

if i dont have fleece, what can i use ?

i have clear polythene, can i just lay that over the beds ?

Those lucky ones who have a hose can spray their plants in the morning to clear the frost.

actually the bride was supposed to be a guest (she's important in a charity he is patron of) but has had to decline her invitation since the date change!!

Fortunately I havent gotten around to planting anything too sensitive to frost out on the plot.  I planted early spuds last weekend, but they are deeply planted with a mulch over the top (a no dig technique in case you were wondering), so should be fine as no growth has reached the surface yet.

No the main worry is the tomatoes and bedding plants in th greenhouse. I have a small heater, which I hope will be enough to keep the cold out.

That said i dont think it will be as bad where i live as some places. i did a search on metcheck for a local weather. The forecast temps for my postcode area are higher than even those for the rest of the county in general, so in theory there should be no problems.  :-\The forecast could be totaly wrong though! >:(

Just got back from holiday to find that my 'soft' bedding plants had been turned to mush because of the friday frost.  I had asked my daughters to look after them ... obviously not one of my greatest ideas :(

My rocket spuds that have been in for about 6 weeks got frosted  :'(

I even had them under a layer of fleece, but the tops had grown so much they must have been touching the fleece  :( Oh well, I am sure they will recover  :)

My kohl rabi took a turn for the worst and I am blaming the frost.  Sprouts and cabbages were fine!  Good job I have another lot on the go already.

Dear oh dear, you lot on the north island are really having it rough. Here on the garden isle it has been shorts and t-shirts for the last 3 weeks we haven't had a frost since last spring (march 05) now it summertime and will stay like that until late oct.

Got to go now and plant my bananas.
