The shortest day

I like this day as things can only get better with the daylight getting longer 90 seconds to start with but getting more each day. A couple or three of weeks to start looking for spuds. And I always start my toms and peppers round new years day on the windowsill. All the seeds in the shops are usually on offer so time to work out what to grow this year.

So is the longest night before the shortest day or after it?

Good question and although there isn't much in it I think it depends on the exact timings of the solstice.  Tonight is the longest night of the year so I think it generally after the shortest day..
It is complicated by the fact that mornings continue to get lighter later after the solstice - the sunrise is actually later tomorrow and will be until 3-4 January..
Tomorrow the day here is 5 seconds longer than today, then we gradually add a few extra seconds a day so the days around the solstice are pretty much the same length anyway..
