I urgently need sunshine as I am getting very down, so I am off to find some.  I will be ready for the new allotment year when I get back.

So far a good year.  They made something of a mixup in the garden centre and I got a very nice pair of secateurs cheaper than expected.

I was hankering after some sun and looked into popping down to the Canaries for a week or so. But looking in my diary I have so many things to do I shall not make it until mid april. Not much point  as the summer will be beckoning here then.

Still plenty of fun things to do in the next few months. Wassailing later this week which should turn into a right booze up. The the local morrismens feast and a few gigs in some local folk clubs which will also test my kidneys. Then on to The Isle of Wight Accoustic music festival which runs for ten days, plus the spring equinox and st. patricks day for some holigan music on the squeezebox. Also on the list is a trip to the local theatre to see Fascinating Aida which will let me sit back and watch somebody else perform instead of me putting in all the work.

Mind you it was nice and sunny for most of today, down to shirtsleeves for a while.

My last holiday went nowhere someone stole my passport on the way to the airport so I was grounded.  It takes quite a long time to get a new one.  So really looking forward to this one.  Here hoping I get there this time.  Unfortuneately I was going with daughter before this time I am going on my own so will not be the same.

I hate winter so grey ,cold and wet ,I did have a look at the seeds and my plans for the lotty ,still fed up ! wow! my better half has booked a holibob to Portugal going on 6 days yee-haa ! feeling happy now best get packing !

Don't need a holiday yet which is just as well as I won't get one till August although OH did suggest going off for a few days to break up the winter.  However, winter has yet to arrive.   I've spent 5 hours out there today in temps of 13C with sun and wind doing weeding and planting and transplanting in two front beds.    I also repaired my veggie garden's windbreak which was damaged by excessive winds at the weekend and I walked the dogs - well, I accompanied them while they galloped across fields and played ticky.    Feeling exhausted now but in a good way.

Isn't that warm for the continent at this time of year?

It certainly is.  Normally we're at -13C or worse at this time of year.  The 6th of January 2009 we went down to -32C and then stayed at -25C for a couple of weeks with easterly winds and no snow.   Killer winter.

I have a clematis on my north facing back wall which has some fine new shoots, sedums and peonies are showing new growth, bulbs are getting ahead of themselves.  Snowdrops have been out in the front garden since the 17th of December.

It's ridiculous.   There will be tears when winter does finally hit.  We've had incredible gales, thunder storms and floods of rain but only a bit of frost and no snow yet.

Errr. I think we were talking about holidays in the sun. Going up to the frozen wastelands of the north and looking at wooly pigs is more of a mission than a cocktail by the pool in the sun.

Does look interesting though, especially the tours around the Black Sheep Brewery. Might put it on my annual tour of the north where I go to distribute alms and also to remind me how lucky I am to live down south.

I am with Obelix, it is extremely clement here for this time of year, around 14°C !!! Sopping wet but green and mild all round. It will have to get frosty sooner or later though.. I better hurry up and move those fruit bushes!

Ace I think it is seriously cool to live on the Isle of Wight! I remember taking the ferry over to it as a small child and thinking that this was the bees' knees. But surely the North has its merits? Like beer? Lancashire hotpot? Yorkshire pudding? :-)

He particularly likes going to the dog racing as it gives him an opportunity to get out his flat cap and long johns. Despite what he says on here I know he loves black pudding and mushy peas. Sorry to "out" you Ace but it is time you face up to your deviant behaviour!

Whoo Hooo, that's good from a race that gets their Saturday nights entertainment by stuffing a ferret down their trouser legs. Let's see what the different cultures have.

North = Morrisons a store that caters to the shivering hoards with cheap and nasty tasteless food

South =Waitrose, need I say more.

North = half a pint of froth in every pint

South = Bombay Sapphire with proper tonic, not that morrisons rubbish

North = nosey neighbours who want to know your business and keep popping in unannounced

South = Nearest neighbour 20 mins away 

North  = Grey skies and swimming pools that people relieve themselves in.

South  = sunshine and  sandy beaches with a warm sea you can swim in.

North =  Yorkshire tea

South =  earl grey

I could go on,  but you get my drift.

But all joking aside, you do have Booths supermarkets which are so superior to any others. I must admit my forays up north have always been a treat,  nice people, nice countryside when you get out of town, fish and chips, champion pies, the wenches are built to last and although at first it was annoying, the nice little chat with the counter staff in most shops. I could never get on with all that pigeon farming you do, as I prefer to give them a sporting chance when I shoot them.  I shall be up there sometime this year when I can find a good deal on ebygum Bay.

Hope you are feeling a bit better Digeroo, we have had the odd hour or so of sunshine since you wrote this. Even an hour of  can make a difference!
