For weeks now after finding a hedghog in my wee plastic greenhouse, every day i put food in  the greenhouse for it,and water ,each morning its gone ,now I was not so well today and thought i'd better do the food earler in the morning I did get out late afternoon to look at my seedlings and the food was gone? I thought hedgehogs slept during the day?I wondered if I HAVE been feeding a hedghog or what ,I never see anything I put some food on a chair in the greenhouse to see if its a cat!!or even a rat!maybe one day i might bump into it!!!

Hedgehogs are sometimes active during the day, especially if there is a lack of food around, but I have so many slugs I am not sure they need feeding at the moment.   I'd rather they ate the slugs.

Was this hedgehog too small to hibernate safely?  At this time of year they would normally be going into hibernation over winter.  I would stop feeding just in case it is rats etc.

Is there any hedgehog poo around the feeding area. You could try putting a plate or something over the food bowl. The hedgehog will knock it off if it one you have visiting. I get very excited when I see HH poo :icon_cheers: :drunken_smilie:.

It depends what they've been eating. It's usually black & looks like a squeeze of toothpaste. What food have you put out?

I've noticed that hedgehogs can be very active during the day in Sept/Oct, personally I think they're trying to glean that last bit of fat before the hibernation period kicks in.

As an aside, seeing as we're on the subject (maybe i should start another thread) I've been reading that hedgehogs don't eat THAT much in the way of our molluscy enemies. http://www.britishhedgehogs.org.uk/FAQS/the_basic_facts.htm
