I was given an amaryllis last Christmas and when it stopped flowering I cut off the leaves (I think)and put it in my greenhouse. I have completely ignored it but now it's starting to flower again! Is this th normal time of year for it to re-flower? I guess I should water it now. What about feeding?

Thats fab, I think it is normal for them to flower now rather than be forced into xmas flowering. Yes give it a tomato feed and perhaps pot on after its flowered. You can also successfully germinate the seeds and it doesnt take long to grow small bulbs from them.

I didnt cut the leaves of mine and they are sitting the the gh in full healthy leaf with no signs of flower but im happy that they are happy and want some good strong bulbs so they can do what they want for now... but a little jealous of your new flower.  ;)

Thnks for your replies. When you say it doesn't take long, how long roughly? I'm not a very patient gardener but will give it a try if we're not talking yers!

It is such a shame that people fail to treat amaryllis as a bulb and start cutting the leaves off. They are bulbs and need the foliage to replace the goodness used in flowering. I have a sheet  explaining my way of growing them that I give away when I do pot plant talks. If you care to contact me I will gladly email a copy to you. Mine flower every year and reproduce extra bulbs. You can see pictures of mine on my blogsite.

Too late for our spring show but she bloomed in April.

As she is tonight, leaves only pulled when dead and a couple of babies on the way.

The pot is kept small as earlier suggested but it sits high in the potholder so it doesn't get waterlogged. A feed in springtime and one after it flowers, then an odd water when I remember in the winter. The bulb is about 4 or 5 years old now and belonged to my m-i-l.

Thanks, laurie. I will send you a PM. Mine produced two nice flowers but they didn't last as long as the earlier ones.

Lovely flower. Whoops, when you said treat as bulb! dont de-leaf does that include Gladioli? I cut the leaves off some of my bulbs but have some still in ground to dig up then put in greenhouse.

Think daffodil, crocus, and broad leaved bulb plants. Most bulbs get their nutrients to the bulb via the leaves once the flower has been and gone with a little late feed. Glads included! Laurieuk's info is well worth the read for bulb growers.
